A price you can read before you write to us

Most law firm websites answer the cost question with an invitation to ask. That is fine for a dispute, where the honest answer depends on what the other side does. It is not fine for work that is the same every time, and a good deal of what this firm does is the same every time.

What follows is the whole of it: the services carrying a published figure, and the ones where the figure comes back within one business day of your details. Every fee is exclusive of VAT, which is added where it applies, and exclusive of disbursements such as court fees, Land Registry fees and courier charges, which are passed on at cost.

A written report by a partner on your position under the 183-day and 60-day rules, the day-count plan, and whether the non-dom exemption is available and for how long. Delivered within two business days.

Each of these is a fixed fee rather than an hourly one. The figure depends on facts we need from you first, so it comes back within one business day and no work starts before you approve it.

Contracts, searches, title and transfer, quoted as a fixed fee before the work starts. A purchase with a complication in it is quoted once the complication is known.

What is not here

Work that cannot honestly carry one figure

Contested proceedings, cross-border estates, shareholder disputes and construction claims are not on this page, and putting a number on them would be a guess dressed as a quote. What they carry instead is staged pricing: each step is quoted before it is begun, and you decide whether to take it.

In litigation that means the assessment and the demand are quoted together, issuing and serving separately once we know whether the debtor is in Cyprus, and contested proceedings by stage rather than as a single figure. The reasoning is set out under litigation and debt recovery.

A successful claimant generally recovers a contribution towards legal costs from the other side. A contribution is not the whole bill, so it is one input into the decision rather than a reason to litigate.

Common questions

Why publish fees at all?

Because the alternative wastes everyone's time. A reader who cannot find out what something costs writes an email to ask, waits, and often decides in the meantime. Where the work is genuinely standard, the figure is knowable in advance and there is no reason to keep it behind an enquiry.

Why is some work not on this page?

Because a fixed fee is only honest where the work is predictable. Contested proceedings, cross-border estates and disputes are quoted by stage, before each stage is begun, so you decide whether to take it. What is not predictable is not priced here rather than priced badly.

Is VAT included in these figures?

No. The figures are exclusive of VAT, which is added where it applies, and exclusive of disbursements such as court fees, Land Registry fees and courier charges, which are passed on at cost.

Can a fee change after it is quoted?

Not for the work quoted. If something emerges that changes the scope, we say so before doing the work and quote the additional step separately, so nothing appears on a fee note that you have not agreed.

What does a fee quoted within 24 hours mean?

That you send the details through the form on the relevant page, and we reply within one business day with a fixed figure for the work described. No work starts before you have the figure and approve it.
